How to Portable pulse oximeters - their main functions and limitations.

What are the portable pulse oximeters designed for and what the basic instructions for their usage are. Nellcor pulse oximetry is a very useful system to monitor patients in various circumstances, and in case of having limited resources portable pulse oximeters are a real way out allowing assessment of several parameters of the patient.

By the way of their usage and their construction portable pulse oximeters can be define the following types: Hand Held pulse oximeter, finger pulse oximeter, used in hospitals and dental offices, Hand Held pulse oximeter, essential for athletes and high altitude pilots, fingertip pulse oxymeter and table pulse oximeter.
portable pulse oximetersThis device is currently an essential part of monitoring patients, which gives the operator information about the cardio- respiratory status of the patient. Portable pulse oximeters have been widely used in the recovery rooms and in the process of anesthesia, in intensive care and in general wards as well, where the staff hasn't undergone appropriate training. Untrained staff may cause harm to the patient, as portable pulse oximeter has limitations and pitfalls. The main goal of this article is to make the occasional use of portable pulse oximeters safe.

The main function of portable pulse oximeters is to measure the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin. This function can be affected by various factors, such as shivering, ambient light, pulse rate and rhythm, abnormal hemoglobin, cardiac function. The oximeter gives only an indication of the patient's oxygenation and not the ventilation, which can't give a reliable security while giving supplemental oxygen. Putting a pulse oximeter finger sensor on the patient will give an opportunity to measure the proportion of oxygen to each molecule of haemoglobin. Besides, it will allow measuring the pulse rate.
Portable pulse oximeters don't give any information regarding the blood oxygen content, ventilation, blood pressure or cardiac output. Their main function is to measure the concentration of oxygen in blood. This portable device should be used by people who need to measure their oxygen level all the time, and they can place it just in a small bag, and it is nearly as sensitive as the equipment of the hospital. Low oxygen level in blood may be an indicator of a serious disease of heart or circulatory system, and blood oxygen monitoring is very important.
All the parts and accessories of the portable pulse oximeter should be in order and the device will operate properly. It is especially useful for patients with pulmonary, cardiac or circulatory diseases and for those who have to take supplemental oxygen.
While using this device it is recommended to take into consideration a few warnings:
·For proper work anything like nail polish or dried blood should be removed not to absorb light.
·One shouldn't use the oximeter on an arm on which automatic cuff of blood pressure is applied, as whenever the cuff inflates the flow of blood to the finger will be stopped.
·Movement may be the cause of getting inaccurate information regarding oxygen saturation.
